From 2018 to 2021, KOICA carried out the project 'Integrated Rural Development for IDP Communities in Azerbaijan through the Revitalization of the Kahriz Water Supply System' in refugee camps of rural areas of Azerbaijan. This project restored the traditional water supply systems (kahriz) in eight regions and constructed the Water Distribution Infrastructure (WDI). To ensure safe drinking water for 30,000 refugees from 8,000 households, the Water Users Committee composed of local residents has been organized and kahriz management technicians have been trained.

The water supply systems built in the project’s target areas are being used for living and irrigation by the residents. It is expected to increase regional incomes and help the area adapt to climate change. In addition, the foundation for restoring the traditional water supply system has been laid by establishing the National Master Plan for Kahriz Renovation in Azerbaijan.
